Social Comparison Among Indonesians on Social Media

In Indonesia, more and more people especially youth are falling into the trap of social comparison on social media. This trend refers to the tendency to compare one’s own life with others online, often leading to feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, or low self worth.

The most affected group is young Indonesians aged 15 to 29, especially students and fresh graduates. They frequently compare their achievements, looks, or lifestyles with influencers and celebrities on Instagram and TikTok. This is partly driven by the rise of curated content and beauty filters, which make ordinary people appear “perfect.”

This trend has become more popular in recent years due to the increasing screen time among Indonesians. According to We Are Social (2024), the average Indonesian spends 3 hours and 18 minutes daily on social media. The longer the exposure, the stronger the impact of unrealistic comparisons.

The trend is still growing, especially with the popularity of viral challenges and lifestyle vlogs. Personally, I believe this trend is concerning. It promotes unrealistic standards and can harm mental health, leading to stress or depression.

We need to raise awareness and encourage people to scroll more mindfully. Everyone should remember: what you see online is often a highlight reel, not real life.
